Mireya Campos named Explore Horizons’ Young Writer of the Year
May 22, 2015
An 8th grader from Watauga Middle School has been crowned winner of Explore Horizons’ Young Writer of the Year Competition. The event, which launched in March, attracted hundreds of entrants from across the metroplex, with the top selection being judged by best-selling British author Jonathan Meres – writer of the hugely successful World of Norm children’s books.
The theme of this year’s competition, organized by math, reading and writing tutoring provider, Explore Horizons, was ‘Strange Events & Peculiar Happenings’. Mireya’s story was a spooky tale about a girl lost inside a mirror, written with great creative flair and imagination. Mireya is due to be presented with her prize of a trophy and Kindle Fire HD, as well as $500 worth of books for her school at Watauga Middle School on Tuesday May 26th.
Jonathan Meres, award-winning author of the World of Norm said: “Mireya’s story fit the bill of ‘Strange Events & Peculiar Happenings’ absolutely perfectly. It’s an eerie tale of spine-chilling reflections, and spooky goings on which will definitely make you think again the next time you look in a mirror… If you dare! Congratulations, Mireya. And well done to all of you who entered. The overall standard was incredibly high, which meant that it was a really tough decision to have to make. Keep up the good work!”
Organizers of the competition, Explore Horizons, has centers in Plano, Alliance Town Center and Colleyville and the teams ran story-writing workshops with children across the DFW metroplex to encourage them to put pen to paper and give writing a try!
Belinda Southgate, Head of US Marketing at Explore Horizons says: “It’s only the second year that we have run the Explore Horizons’ Young Writers’ Award and the response we’ve had has been fantastic. As Jonathan says, the standard of entries has been wonderful and shows what a creative bunch our children are! Mireya has fought off some tough competition to be named our winner and should be incredibly proud.”
Explore Horizons provides math, reading and writing enrichment and tutoring for children in grades Pre-k to 8 across DFW.
